Discovery Room at Public Library
The Discovery Room began in 1987 in memory of a Junior Woman's Club member who passed away. It is set up for preschoolers with various interest centers on a theme. These units are changed each month with enough for more than a year. We have recently received memorial money to purchase a 'Health Unit' in memory of the original members' daughter who was killed in a car wreck.
Parent of the Year - 5th Grade
Each May all 5th graders write an essay on why their parent should be parent of the year. The winning essay is framed. The child and parent receive gifts - some for them to enjoy together such as movie theater tickets, sports equipment gift certificate, etc. The class of the winning student also receives a treat from Dairy Queen.
Flowers at Centralia Welcome Sign
For over 20 years the Club has provided the flowers for a planter at the East Welcome sign to Centralia. Not only do we change them with the seasons, but the water must be transported from home to water the plants! We are waiting for daffodils to come through the ground and bloom this spring! We purchased the bulbs from the local garden club's fund raiser of locally grown bulbs.
Valentine Little Prince & Princess Contest
We place articles in both local newspapers about the Valentine Prince and Princess contest. Any child from infant to 8 years old (other than members’ children) maybe entered. The family sends a picture plus $1.00 to enter. We place a cabinet with slots built like indoor postal mail boxes in a local grocery store for 2 weeks prior to Valentine’s Day. The children with the most votes by money win. Their winnings are gifts from local businesses for a Princess & Prince, plus runners up. They may ride in the local Halloween Parade. This is our main fund raiser for the other projects.
Veterans in local Nursing Homes
We take gifts to the Veterans in our local Nursing Homes - Valentine’s Day, Veterans Day, Christmas and Independence Day. The Computer made cards thank them for their service to our Country. We deliver them to each Veteran who is happy to see us.
The club purchases gifts for a needy family who has applied through the community BCMW Assistance Program (Bond, Clinton, Marion, Washington Counties). They list the needs of clothing for a child and wants/needs of toys or educational materials. Our club tries to fill the family’s needs with wrapped gifts. We also include cookies or candy for the family.
